re:Invent 2022 – Infrastructure

To make it easier to deepen a knowledge, I have categorised the videos I am interested in according to:

  1. Innovation
  2. Infrastructure
  3. Data and AI
  4. Security
  5. Costs
  6. Use Cases

Today I am sharing the Infrastructure part.

All below comes from a public AWS channel, I only share selected and classified by me, the texts come from AWS youtube channel, links in the description.

  • Building containers for AWS

You have many choices when deploying containers on AWS. Whether you’re building with AWS Lambda, Amazon ECS, or Kubernetes with Amazon EKS, the process starts with building your images. This session breaks down guidance on building with containers into two parts. First, take a look at some popular choices for development tools, and discover the easiest way to get started with a fully open-source development environment. Then, learn about development patterns and hear practical advice for container development on AWS.

  • Rust is interesting, but does it really make sense for me?

In this session, see some of the seemingly outlandish claims made by Rust and its ever-growing community put to the test. Rust has won Stack Overflow’s most loved programming language award in its annual developer survey—7 years in a row! But how good is it really? Join Tim McNamara, a long-time Rustacean, AWS Software Engineer, and author of “Rust in Action,” to learn about what Rust has to offer and, perhaps more importantly, when to avoid it.

  • Building next-gen applications with event-driven architectures

Event-driven architectures can solve many difficult problems in modern enterprise workloads. For example, it can be challenging to work with large amounts of data in different data stores and locations. Teams building microservices architecture often find that integration with other applications and external services can make their workloads more monolithic and tightly coupled. In this chalk talk, learn how to use event-based architecture to decouple and decentralize application components. Discover how you can use AWS messaging services to connect microservices and coordinate data flow using minimal custom code.

  • Competition of the modern workloads: Serverless vs Kubernetes on AWS

How do you choose the right infrastructure for you? In this session, witness a competition between the serverless and Kubernetes approaches, examining use cases from each speaker’s experience. After an overview of each architecture and the AWS services that are a part of it, compare maintenance and compliance, scaling, developer experience, cost, monitoring and logging, and ecosystem. For each category, consider the advantages and disadvantages of each architecture side by side, taking into consideration various aspects and restrictions different companies have when choosing an infrastructure. Vote on which approach wins each round during the session.

  • Kubernetes virtually anywhere, for everyone

Kubernetes has become a standard way for organizations to innovate and modernize their application portfolio. AWS developed Amazon EKS to make Kubernetes more accessible to organizations of all sizes, allowing them to free up resources and focus on what matters most: their businesses. Join Barry Cooks, VP of Kubernetes at AWS, to learn how AWS customers are using Amazon EKS to run their most demanding applications in the cloud, on premises, and at the edge and how that is shaping the Amazon EKS roadmap and our community involvement.

My comment: Why Kubernetes is awesome? Why AWS is best place for Kubernetes?

  • Get started building your first serverless, event-driven application

Emily Shea, Head of Application Integration Go-To-Market at AWS, shares firsthand experience and practical steps for getting started building serverless web applications. Emily wanted to build a solution to an everyday problem: regularly practicing a second language. This session shares the process of evolving that solution from an AWS Lambda function into a fully featured application that uses Amazon API Gateway, AWS Lambda, Amazon EventBridge, AWS Step Functions, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon QuickSight, the AWS Amplify Console, and more. Learn why serverless is a great tool set for experimenting with new ideas, and hear how the extensibility and modularity of serverless applications allow you to start small and quickly add features.

  • Unleash developer productivity with infrastructure from code

A new category of developer tools is emerging that challenges the legacy-centric approach to building modern cloud applications. The complexity of configuring services, implementing best practices, and securing workloads has led to challenges with developer productivity, cost, performance, and time to market. In the current cloud-native landscape, many organizations are left with skill gaps and unrealized cloud initiatives. Infrastructure from code is a new, configuration-free approach that interprets application code then automatically deploys, configures, and optimizes infrastructure to support your workloads. In this session, explore these tools and see how they can be used to build better and faster on AWS.

My comment: Slow development cycles?

  • Modern applications: An infrastructure perspective

Modern applications are usually fault tolerant and stateless and can benefit from efficient compute design patterns. In some cases, there is a need for granular control of the underlying infrastructure for specific performance and latency needs. This session dives into Amazon EC2 Fleet and Auto Scaling group management patterns, instance sizing, scaling, and diversification strategies for improving the performance, resilience, and price of the workload. Learn about using Karpenter and Amazon EKS managed node groups. Mobileye also joins the session to share how they architected an Amazon EKS cluster for creating ground truth data to be performant, scalable, and cost effective.

My comment: For architects, solution architects

  • Shipping software should be boring

We hold these truths to be self-evident: that deployments should be fast, easy, and reliable, and that you should be able to understand the inner workings of your software (no matter how intricate or unusual) just by clicking around from the outside (observability, in other words). In this talk, see what it looks like when you build and ship code with real observability. Engineers deploy a change to honeycomb.io live onstage, then demonstrate how honeycomb.io has confidence in their deploys by inspecting first the deployment pipeline and then the changes that were just deployed. The talk includes audience interaction (come see what your click looks like!). This presentation is brought to you by Honeycomb, an AWS Partner.
